Top Tips to Enjoy Lake Arrowhead from Owner of Pine Rose Cabins
For our latest post in our stakeholder series, we’d like to introduce Tricia DuFour, owner and operator of Lake Arrowhead’s popular Pine Rose Cabins.
Tell us about the Arrowhead Pine Rose Resort - a little history, how long has it been operating, who owns it, what makes it special/popular?
Arrowhead Pine Rose Cabins is one of the oldest running cabin resorts on the mountain. It began as a forest ranger/logging camp in the early 1900's. Back then, the area was called "Strawberry Flats." In the 1920's, Bert Switzer became the first full-time forest ranger and he opened up a Year O' Round store and post office where our lobby is now. In 1948, the Dowds took over the resort adding a pool, more cabins, and pads for campers. It wasn't until 1993 that my husband David DuFour (a local contractor) and I stumbled upon the property. We immediately fell in love. The cabins brought back fond memories of when my family owned a cabin in Running Springs. We also thought it was an ideal place to raise our 3 children. For the past 20+ years, David and I have used our talents to redecorate and restore the cabins.
Pine Rose is truly unique because none of the cabins are the same. They are all individually themed and different sizes, from romantic studios to large lodges for 20. We offer the best of both worlds: the resort is a perfect blend of a vacation rental but with the amenities of a hotel. All the cabins have fully equipped kitchens and their own decks or patios with B-B-Q's. Pine Rose is also like a hotel in that we always have someone on the grounds to help you. Plus there are play areas, a small gift store, a seasonal heated pool and spa. There is a hiking trail on the property with beautiful streams and ponds to enjoy.
Pine Rose's wedding site at Hidden Creek has become a huge So Cal destination wedding location. The beautiful forest backdrops and natural setting is now attracting brides from all over the world, as well as celebrities.
What have you found invaluable that visitors should know before they go to Lake Arrowhead? Anything unexpected, surprising or interesting...?
Most visitors don't realize the dramatic drop in temperatures from day to night, especially in the spring and fall. Also, always carry chains in fall through spring because you never know when we could have a change in the weather.
Our area is known for its fabulous hiking. The San Bernardino Mountains are really unique because they are 1 of only 3 mountain ranges in the world that run east to west in a Mediterranean climate, which is why we have such a variety of beautiful foliage.
Tell us about some of your favorite dining, shopping, attractions, sightseeing, historic landmarks, places to stay, etc. in Lake Arrowhead and San Bernardino County
There's lots of great shopping! We have the Lake Arrowhead Village, Skypark at Santa's Village, plus lots of shops scattered around the mountain. Personally, I love the local antique and curiosity shops.
Lou Eddie’s Pizza is one of the best pizza placees in the USA according to the Travel Channel. I love the Antler Grill, great food and just down the street from Pine Rose. Hortencias on the “Rim of the World” with its fabulous views is also a great hit with visitors.
In the summer, we have 4 lakes in the area all offering different water activities. In the winter, we have Snow Valley Mountain Resort offering skiing, snow boarding and snow play. Fall and spring are the best for hiking and fishing. The newly re-opened Skypark at Santa's Village is also big attraction.
Is time of year important when visiting SB County? What kinds of different experiences can visitors have depending on when they go?
The Lake Arrowhead area is truly a year around destination. It is a wonderful place to experience the 4 seasons right here in Southern California.
